When it comes to kitchen renovations, a lot of us think about the basics: wall color, backsplash style, new furniture, and overall layout. However, there is one thing that we seem to just breeze over – namely, the design of the ceiling. Gone are the days when you would only decorate the walls and leave the ceiling white; a new era has come, and it demands that we give closer attention to our ceilings.
Wallpaper Ceilings
Ceilings have always been ignored when it comes to home improvement. “There’s no reason it shouldn’t be treated with as much thought, respect, and glamor as the other four walls. To make it stand out more, treat the ceiling differently than the walls,” says Summer Thornton, Chicago designer. She used Mondrian-inspired wallpaper designs in some of her clients’ homes, as well as other intricate designs to make the place look more interesting.
Laminate Ceilings
Laminate may indeed be associated with floors, but no one says you cannot plaster it on your ceiling as well. As a price-sensitive renovation solution, you can use laminate to create various looks – for example, a wood ceiling. Laminate can also add comfort and extra coziness to the room, not to mention that it also has small soundproofing properties. Indeed, it may not have the same effect as proper insulation, but it may muffle the sounds coming in and out of the room through the ceiling.
Wood Ceilings
Wood ceilings have been here for some time, and it is unlikely that they are going away anytime soon. Plus, aside from the traditional look that they provide, they have other purposes as well. “Cladding the entire ceiling was another way to use wood and get that warmth that I was looking for,” said interior designer Dee Murphy. The warmth is as physical as it is from the mind – because while wood captures the warmth, it also brings it in through its earthly colors.
Bamboo Ceilings
If you are a fan of eco-design, then you will certainly find an interest in bamboo ceilings. Bamboo plates and panels can be used to create quite an exquisite look, and while the result might be similar to standard wood or wallpaper, you can get extra warmth into the room by using this design. Plus, if you add some small bamboo stems in the room to decorate the rest of the place, you can get quite an exotic-looking room.
Molding Ceilings
Ceilings with molding have been a hit in the past and continue to be a hit in the future as well. “Designers and people, in general, are too attracted by ‘new’, but nothing ages more quickly than ‘newness’. All my objects reflect [a] marriage between past and present,” says famous Dutch interior designer Marcel Wanders. Something as intricate as moldings will make every ceiling look special, even though the technique has been in use for many years.
Tile Ceilings
Yes, you did not read that one wrong: tile ceilings have grown quite popular lately – not only in the bathroom and the kitchen but also in places such as the living room. These types of ceilings can reflect light, creating a cozy atmosphere in the room, and adding the impression of more space. With that in mind, since this ceiling design is already extravagant enough by itself, you might want to avoid going overboard with the other features in the room.
Two-Colored Ceilings
If you don’t want to do any major renovations and simply wish to redecorate with paint, then you might want to consider two-colored ceilings. These ceilings are a great way to add some sophistication and drama to the room, without spending too much on supplies. Plus, since many people are trying out DIY home improvement this year, this option comes in handy – mainly because you can easily do it yourself.
The Bottom Line
Ceilings do not have to be boring. The choice of ceiling belongs to you, depending on your preferences. You can go for tile ceilings, laminate ceilings – even bamboo ceilings. You have many popular trends to follow this year, all of which can turn your house into a glorious and cozy den.
