How to Choose the Right Cabinet Color for Your Home

Right Cabinet Color for Your Home

Cabinets are a necessity in every bathroom and kitchen. But even though the main reason you choose cabinets is to have extra space for storing your belongings, they also add to the overall design of the room. For this reason, you must be careful when you choose cabinet colors. So, whether you’re refreshing or remodeling the space, you shouldn’t overlook the importance of cabinet color.

Ideally, you should go for a color that matches the rest of the décor so that everything looks smooth. So, how do you pick the right cabinet color for your home? Here are some tips that should help.

Don’t Be Scared to Settle for White

White is a common choice for cabinets, and it’s perhaps too widespread. Moreover, white cabinets are easy to match with whatever décor you have in your kitchen/bathroom, and this is one reason why so many people go for this shade. On top of that, white cabinets are perfect for people who do not want to go for bold colors that they’re not sure of.

White might seem outdated, but if you pair it with the right shades and décor elements, it can look just as spectacular and modern as crazy colors.

“Timeless yet modern, it will give classic cabinetry an uplifting look that will work as the perfect base for neutral and colorful accessories and furnishings alike,” says Harvey Jones creative director Melissa Klink.

Consider the Wall Color

One thing that should be taken into account when you choose the cabinet color is the color of your walls. Are they light-colored or dark-colored? Furthermore, will a certain cabinet color look good on top of your walls, or will it look out of place?

For example, if your walls are darker, then the cabinets should be painted in a lighter color, so the room doesn’t feel small and cluttered. Meanwhile, with white walls, almost any color will look good.

Choose Between Paint vs Stains

Most people who redecorate or remodel their homes go for wooden cabinets, especially in the kitchen. So, the color you pick depends on the type of wood used for the cabinets. The good news is that stains can help you change the color when necessary.

“Paint is largely the more popular option for kitchen cabinets,” says Ottimo founder Ashok Basoya. “While paint does not respond well to touch-ups in case of scratches, it can be easily painted over with the same or a different color, creating an all-new look.”

Pay Attention to the Lighting and Size

If the black cabinets you’ve set your eyes on look tempting, you should first consider whether they would actually look good in your space based on the size of the room and the lighting in it.

Some spaces are small and have little natural light, so adding dark cabinets in there will make the room seem too cramped. Therefore, darker colors should only be considered when you’re dealing with a large room that is lit properly.

For smaller spaces, you should go for lighter colors for the cabinets.

Think About the Mood You Want to Set

One thing to consider when choosing cabinet colors for your home is the atmosphere you are trying to create. Do you want the space to look more dramatic or intense, or rather minimalistic and elegant? For the former, you should choose darker shades, whereas for the latter you can mix greys, white, and black.

Go With Different Colors for Upper and Lower Cabinets

Don’t keep the upper and lower cabinets in the same color if you want to improve visuals and make a statement in your kitchen. For instance, lighter colors may be more suitable for upper cabinets. For lower cabinets, you should go for darker shades if you have small children or dogs, which might lead to staining and scratching.
