Scandinavian style is considered as a modern design today. It provides a simple but sophisticated look that is perfect in modern households. This style has Nordic roots but is prevalent in today’s design. If you want to incorporate this into your home, here are some ways to achieve it.
Wood
Scandinavian kitchen style focuses on contemporary foundations. Wood is the best material for your kitchen space. Wood can also be used for countertops like the butcher counters. It gives a great aesthetic and functionality. If properly installed and sealed, wood can last more than a couple decades. Scandinavian designs usually incorporate light wood colors to provide a bright aesthetic. The most common types of wood used in this kitchen style include ash wood and oak wood.
Simplicity
You don’t need to decorate your kitchen space with various furniture and appliances. Scandinavian style centers on simplicity. Furniture is usually a huge part in designing a space, but furniture in Scandinavian style is meant to blend seamlessly with the rest of the space. It aims on uniformity and minimalism. You don’t need to buy big appliances that you will barely use. In this case, less is actually more.
White
This is the color that is usually associated with Scandinavian design. Scandinavia has harsh winters and somehow the color white is associated with that season. Hence, most Scandinavian designs work around light colors. This does not mean, however, that you cannot put pops of color in your design. The aim of this style is to provide a cheerful interior and color is a great way to add cheer in any space. You can add a hint of color through backsplash or just by adding a vase of flowers.
Natural Light
Make sure to have windows to provide natural light in your kitchen. Scandinavian design also focuses on straight lines, so a window will provide that symmetry. If you cannot incorporate natural light in your small kitchen, make sure to provide enough lighting to that effect. A window is usually the best way to get natural light but there are a lot of lighting options today that can give the same effect.
No Handles
As previously mentioned, Scandinavian design usually opts for straight lines. This means cupboards and drawers are usually handle free to have uninterrupted linear patterns. Usually, cupboard and cabinet doors are not framed but are placed on top of the frame itself to attain this effect. Since the doors are placed over the frame, they can be easily opened even without a handle.
Functional
This design focuses more on function. Everything in a Scandinavian kitchen is there for a reason, and a specific purpose. The layout of the kitchen needs to be accessible in order for users to be more productive in it. Usually, a Scandinavian kitchen also houses a dining area where everyone can gather because they believe that the kitchen is actually the heart of any home.
Minimal
You don’t need to put various decorative items in your kitchen. Scandinavian style is minimalistic. If you want to display items, it would be best to display objects that you actually daily. For example, instead of hanging a picture on the wall for decoration, hang a wall clock that you will surely look at every day. Instead of displaying ornaments, showcase your favorite rack of herbs. This will not only be nice on the visuals, but also enable you to get a hold of your herbs easily when needed.
Metal
You can add warmth into your Scandinavian kitchen with metallic accents. This is why stainless-steel appliances are great in this design aesthetic. You can do so by adding simple accessories that can be functional as well. If you want to hang a clock in your kitchen, you may opt for a metal one to give a Scandinavian feel in your design. You can also hang your copper pans in display to give the same effect.
Plants
You can add plants into your kitchen. Better yet, you can display potted herbs in it. This way, you can have natural accessories that you can also use for cooking. Wouldn’t it be fun to just snip a few leaves from herbs in your kitchen and put it directly unto your pan for consumption? It will surely provide you with not just a beautiful kitchen but a self-sufficient one as well.
